What this is: A weekly injection from a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists (Advanced: a dual GLP-1/GIP pathway), prepared by a compounding pharmacy and prescribed with a nutrition and activity plan.
How it works: It helps regulate appetite and how quickly the stomach empties.
Who it may be appropriate for: Adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition.
Who should not use it: Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, a history of pancreatitis, or who is pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, reduced appetite.
Serious risks: Possible thyroid tumours, pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, low blood sugar (especially with insulin or sulfonylureas), kidney problems, dehydration.
When to seek care: Severe stomach pain that won't go away, a lump or swelling in the neck, trouble swallowing, signs of an allergic reaction. Call 911 in an emergency.
Interactions: Tell your provider about insulin, diabetes medicines and any oral medicines, since slower stomach emptying can change how they absorb.
